Jobs?

So we here at LFO have been listening to folks talk about the job market. Let us break it down:

1. There are still many jobs. Don’t allow society to shift your thinking in that.

2. Where? We will say that for the film biz, the place to be is LA. I know…but you live in Ohio, or Vegas, or wherever you live. Ok, here’s the deal…

3. Anywhere you are in the world, the job market is the same as long as you have the right mindset. If you believe the market is bad then you are right, if you believe the market is good then you are right. Ya, stole that from good ole Henry Ford… love that man.

We asked our very own Denny Morales on what he thought about this whole job market fiasco…

“There are times when I really don’t care for or need work, and jobs come flooding to me. I give jobs away to others due to this. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it big time. But I sat there and really thought about it, and I really want to help other film-makers, especially new ones, so I decided to give the jobs away. Some folks listen to society too much, they allow society to bleed in and make them think that the economy is shit and we are all doomed. Also, they made to feel they have to compete with everyone in their profession. Look guys and gals, the economy is what you make it upstairs. Our company made 3k in 1 day launching 1 client using videos and all. You must break through the barrier of the negative bull crap. I join many forums and hear nothing but people sweating others about their work and opinions. To become a leader, or to do something you love, you will be criticized every single day, and everyone is going to think you’re doing the wrong thing. Your job is to prove it to yourself that you are doing the right thing, and do it by putting ACTION to your days.”

What the heck does all this have to do with the job market? EVERYTHING! The reason you can’t find a job is due to lack of proper mindset foundation building. Once the lights are on upstairs, you really can do anything. We’re proof, and know it works.

So you may be asking, “what action steps can I take?” Start networking, this is the fuel of anyone’s career in the film biz. Look around for job postings on craigslist. Call your local film office; they have resources for people looking for film jobs. Go to film seminars. Be creative. You never know what you can come up with, or find. If you keep on trying, and don’t give up, you may be surprised at how far you get.

There is a universal law at work and if you believe it or not, it doesn’t matter ‘cause it will still be at work. I suggest you jump on the train now.

Casting Calls=Marketing

1. Why have a casting call?
To get actors and actresses? NOPE…ok fine, it’s true, you do need it for that. But I like to use this process as a secret weapon for something else. I like to use casting calls for show. Yep, that’s right. The pre-show that starts before the show.

2. HUH? What the heck is this blog dude talking about?
Casting calls, if done properly, can also be used to help create buzz for your film. It’s another form or strategy for marketing.

3. Creating the moment!
One way to market your movie before you’ve even started production is getting your casting call in the news, which there are a few ways of doing. Another way, which you will want to be doing anyway, will be contacting talent agencies and telling them you have a casting call coming up. These agencies have their own means of marketing, aka calling for a cast! By advertising for your casting call, they can also be inadvertently advertising for your movie! Just make sure you’re set on your title for this method, it’s that basic thing that everyone will remember!

4. Why all this?
Well think about it, if you’re trying to raise funds at the moment, you’ve already proven to the investor that you’re serious about your film and his/her money will be in the good hands that will bring him/her ROI, which good marketing is the vehicle of. Plus, it’s hard to make your movie without the hopes of getting people interested in it to want to buy and watch it.

Ever find you asking yourself: What the heck does a producer actually do? How do you even become a producer? If so, here’s the answers you’ve been searching for in 5 simple tips:

1. What is a producer?
There may be a proper definition or many different definitions for this role, but basically a producer gets everything on a film moving and oversees all the aspects of it. Basically, if a movie were a road trip, the producer would be the one that made sure the car and everyone in it got from Point A to Point B. Not a good enough analogy? Well, skipping the layman’s terms, a producer is involved from start to finish of the film. The producer is the one to create the foundation for everything else that happens after it. The producer hires on their needed personnel for the the movie. The producer hires the heads of the departments (ex. Director of Photography) and gives them the trust to carry out the task of managing the ones that carry out more specific tasks (Director of Photography brings on his trusted Camera Op, 1st Camera Assistant, and 2nd Camera Assistant). To get started today on learning more about the producer, just enter in your email to the right, and LFO will take you through every step. You don’t have to do anything special, or get anyone’s approval to become a producer. It’s a matter of just ‘doing it’! So what do you do to ‘do it’?

2. Producer’s 1st Task: Find a Story
With so many ideas floating around, this shouldn’t be a hassel. Here are a few tips.
-Local news
-Local book store
-script selling websites

3. Producer’s 2nd Task: Funding
Yes I know, who the heck has money to put into films in this market? Your answer——————————————————> You won’t be disappointed. —————————————> Oh ya put your email in ——->

4. Producer’s 3rd Task: Crew
Team culture is one of the most important assets to any company. Create meetup groups, and networking mixers, or go to them. Make sure you connect well with crew, if not you will find out the hard way on set or maybe right before the big production day starts. Can we say over budget!

5. Producer’s 4th Task: ACTION!
Yes, that word is not only used after cameras are rolling. Go out there and make it happen. Ask questions, then ask some more questions. Grab a camera and shoot something; see what happens. And, lastly, TEST! Always run tests. This will get you acquainted with your crew and equipment checks.
